Therefore, we cannot be sure whether the product that claims to have probiotics contains some bacteria that are needed to have an effect or whether the bacteria can survive long enough to reach your gut. But however, there are probiotics available in the pharmaceutical or pharmaceutically- graded probiotics. These can be more reliable than the probiotics yogurt or other supplements as they undergo certain clinical tests. The European Food Safety Authority has clinically proven that the probiotics supplement and yogurts that claim to boost the immune system don’t increase! Even these authorities were asked to take of these claims from their advertisement.

After the course of 3 months, the probiotic groups continued to lose weight. The result was double as compared to others. This fascinating study gave rise to a next question why the effect was only observed in women. A further study explained that this particular probiotic supplement had only impact on women as there are variations in the body chemistries for both of them. It is possible that a different probiotic may work better on men.

A similar study was conducted by a group of Japanese researchers. In the study, 210 overweight people were equally divided into groups of three. Daily, a 7-ounce of fermented milk was served to everyone. Among the groups, two of the groups drank milk with varying amounts of a probiotic called Lactobacillus gasseri SBT2055. Lactobacillus gasseri SBT2055 has past research that has tied to fat loss. The study shows that about 1 to 3 percent of the belly fat was reduced after 12 weeks. People who had that probiotic milk formula had an approx of 9% of for loss from blood vessels and heart. Apart from these, it is found that taking Lactobacillus gasseri for 12 weeks reduced body weight, fat around organs, BMI, waist size, and hip circumference. To be exact, belly fat decreased by 8.5%. But, when participants stopped the intake of the probiotic, within a month they gained back all of the belly fat. In one of the 4-week study,  a probiotic formulation called VSL#3 was given to the people. It reduced weight gain and fat gain on a diet where people were overfed by 1000 calories per day.[1]

Yukio Kadooka, Snow Brand Company’s researcher, says that your intestines manage the digestion and absorption of food you eat. Kadooka also explains that there is a possibility that the probiotic that is used in the study lowers intestinal inflammation and aids digestion. Or in other words, these probiotics could prevent the buildup of body fat, Kadooka adds.

These studies give us an active signal to probiotics. But before grabbing probiotics from the store, just note the fact that most of the studies about the probiotics and weight loss were conducted by commercial companies who sell these products which claim to have probiotics. It is debatable whether to rely entirely on these funded studies. These kinds of independent studies are either contradictory or inconclusive. According to the paper published in the International Journal of Obesity, some strains of probiotics has an opposite effect, i.e., they contribute to obesity. In addition to that, the probiotics used in the studies are not available in every part of the world. It is not commercially available in the US.  Certainly, there are some probiotics that have assured benefits. Most of the researchers recommend products like Dannon’s Activia yogurt for digestive health benefits. In one study, eating yogurt with Lactobacillus fermented or Lactobacillus amylovorus reduced body fat by 3–4% over a 6-week period. Researchers have found that in healthy children, probiotic supplements had no effect on antibody levels, days of fever and number of infections. Another study of 125 overweight dieters investigated the effects of Lactobacillus rhamnosus supplements on weight loss and weight maintenance.

Of all the studies till date, Lactobacillus gasseri shows the most promising effects on weight loss among all the probiotic bacteria’s. Studies had a positive effect on rodents, reducing the amount of fat from the waistline and it was visibly noticeable the difference, Lactobacillus gasseri appears to be the most effective.
